News: Repost: Translation Help needed

FreakinMeany FreakinMeany — April 2, 2012
We're looking for individuals to help with translation for Mapraider 2.0. If you or someone you know has a knowledge of gaming terminology, and is interested in donating some time to translate small bits of text from English, please contact us and let us know.

Based on Mapraider traffic over the last few years, we're hoping to start with translations for Dutch, French, German and Spanish, but any contributions are welcome and appreciated.

Working on pushing the Hungarian, Spanish and Italian updates now, along with an updated build that fixes some bugs UnShame pointed out.

@UnShame: Awesome, thanks! A couple of questions:

    • Do you remember which page you were on when you logged in and got sent to the home page? Logging in should send you back to the page you were on, but I might have missed a spot.

    • Which browser/platform are you using? You should not get a new window when shift-clicking options in the dropdown menus of breadcrumbs as I specifically coded to override that. I've tested in Chrome, Firefox, Safari and IE and it seems to work properly. You might want to try emptying your cache to make sure you don't have old javascript cached in your browser.

You're right that it's buried in the FAQ. This is temporary -- I eventually will have something displayed right in the dropdowns similar to what you suggest.

And great find with that sort order bug! I was comparing against English option names to pre-populate the current value. Whoops. :)

"Do you remember which page you were on when you logged in and got sent to the home page? "
don't know, maybe it's like that only for me but it sends me to the main page wherever i log in.
    "Which browser/platform are you using?"
    I'm using opera on Win7

I can translate EN -> PT. But there are two major PT dialects, european and brazilian. Grammar wise they are both the same, specially after the grammar unification law that governments approved. But vocabulary wise there are some specific words that are different (nouns, adjectives).

Team: I've updated the beta site with the latest translations and build of the site.

@0kelvin: Would love to have you as part of the team! I've added "Portuguese (Brazil)" to the language selections. Please be sure to join each of the projects and select that language. You do not need to select English too. See my post on the first page for more info and instructions.

@UnShame: Thanks. I always forget about Opera and will look into it.

@RennyManJr and @szogyenyi: Is there a particular reason why you both decided to revert the site slogan back to English? I know slogans are sometimes not translated because they don't work well, but I was hoping it would be :) Does the double-meaning of "expand your game" not work when translated?

As for Italian i think it really works better in english, it really sound a little too childish for my taste when translating the word "game". Leaving it in english seems like the best option for me, it's very understandable "expand - espandi" are very similar and it sounds catchy :D

[EDIT] I don't know if it's a cache related thing but the beta site italian translation isn't really working, or it's working very partially. Pretty much only the account pages are in italian, header, footer, info pages and almost everything else is still in english. Tried with Firefox and Chrome, CTRL+F5 doesn't help.

Whoops! That is what happens when you don't get enough sleep :) Sorry about that. Both the Italian translations and Russian header should be fixed now.

Thanks for the clarification on the slogan, RennyManJr. Makes sense (and it's interesting learning all these details about the translations). I'll revert the header in just a bit.

    The reasons are very simple:
First: The hungarian translation of expand your game is very uninterpretable, hard to translate and understand it. So i think let it English the best opinion.
Second: Slogan like a trademark for any websites i think. It's better not translate it :)

Oh, and i can't wait for the tomorrow launch :)

Also fixed a bug with Javascript localizations. It appears that the translation software (Transifex and/or POEditor) inserted line-breaks in some localizations and those breaks were causing issues with some javascript. Lithuanian had this problem, though I'm don't think it was the only one.

    @UnShame:

Tested with Opera on Win7 and shift clicking the options in the breadcrumb dropdown works as expected for me and I don't get a new window. I'm testing with Opera v11.10. Can you look at your Help > About Opera and let me know what the version you have is?
