News: Official Mapraider.com Map Submission Contest

FreakinMeany FreakinMeany — August 13, 2009
A few weeks ago I announced an unofficial map submission contest in celebration of opening up the submission system so that members could submit any maps they've found online. I'm happy to report that since then, over 290 new maps have been added to the system! Because of the overwhelming response, I thought it was important to make the contest more "official" and am announcing the details here:

Map Submission Contest Details

Any map you submit between May 31st and October 1st, 2009 (June, July, August, September) and that are approved will count towards the total amount of maps you have submitted. Prizes will be awarded to the first three top submitters:

• First Prize
• "Lifetime" subscription to Mapraider (ad-free visits, unlimited access to our high-speed, direct-download mirror, plus other goodies to be announced)
• Limited edition Mapraider T-Shirt
• Limited edition Mapraider Cap
• Limited edition Mapraider Mug
• Second Prize
• 5-Year subscription to Mapraider
• Limited edition Mapraider T-Shirt
• Third Prize
• 1-Year subscription to Mapraider
Need Maps To Submit?

I'm maintaining a list of maps from my personal collection that are on our three mirrors that haven't been added to the database yet. You may use this list for easy access to thousands of maps that you can submit -- just be sure to refresh the list often so that you don't submit a duplicate. Additional maps from a variety of game systems are still being added.

Other Rules and Info

• Map submissions that do not meet the submission guidelines and are not approved do not count.
• Periodic announcements of the current standings may be made, but are not guaranteed to be provided, nor to be accurate.
• If duplicate maps are submitted, the first member to have submitted the map will earn the credit.
• In the case of a tie, the date of the first map after June 1st that each member submitted will be used to make the determination of ranking.
• Subscriptions are for the individual winning members, are not transferrable and can be revoked if abused.
• To receive physical prizes (t-shirts, etc) winners will be required to provide a shipping address to be used for delivery of the prizes.
• The decisions of the judge (FreakinMeany) will be final.
• The contest, rules and prizes are subject to change at any time.

I still have some pending. Are there any problems with them?
• FreakinMeany FreakinMeany — August 22, 2009
Not a problem per se' but a couple do have "issues" that I need to deal with (ie., conflicting filenames with other maps already on the mirrors). I'll be approving another batch of them today (Saturday) though, not to worry :)

oh yeh, what is the tally?
:D

I was wondering when someone was going to ask :) The current standings are:
1. Firefly: 102 maps
2. FB3: 54 maps
3. MaxSterling: 44 maps

When you said you'd "pick up the pace," you weren't kidding, Firefly!

:O
I had no idea :D
Some of the maps are real class (makes me want to map for UT again :D).
The real crap ones make me laugh

Some of these maps have probably never had a screenshot taken by anyone other than the author. I know what you mean about mapping for UT again. It's amazing what you can actually pull off with BSP and clever textures if you know what you're doing.

Especially some of the UT99.org CMP2 maps proved this to me. Ryagiar looked positively modern while only being a UT99 map and keeping a high frame rate (taking the detail into account of course). Sacrimossa even more so with a realistic, complex looking scene rendered almost entirely through BSP and brought to life by clever texture usage. I also just plain found some awesome maps while doing this, like Sph3res, and of course, the almost laughably noobish ones too. And I would finish up my DM-Asbestos straight-up conversion for UT99, though the geometry errors are so terrible I just don't want to deal with them at the moment.

By the way, I would be submitting more though I'm so pressed for time right now and I don't know how many more I'll be able to submit, if any...So congrats in advance on the upcoming win Firefly, hehe.

There's still plenty of time yet :D

No worries, FB3. You guys have been awesome and the contest aside, I can't tell you how incredibly thankful I am for what you've contributed to the site.

You're right -- clever texture usage is an art that I think is very much under appreciated. And Sph3res is a perfect example of an awesome map that I'd never seen before, and I'm sure it won't be the last.
