News: Announcing The Best Maps of '05 Winners

FreakinMeany FreakinMeany — January 26, 2006

We got off to a slow start this year, but it's with great pleasure that I finally reveal the winners of our Best Maps of 2005 contest.

As you probably know, each year we hold a contest by popular vote for the best maps of the previous year. The calendar is currently our once-a-year fund-raising event, and for every calendar sold, Mapraider gets $3.00 (the rest is kept by the printing company) to put towards site and file hosting fees, which are roughly $1,200.00 U.S. a year. The great thing about this is that you can show your support for the site and also get a really cool, limited-edition calendar in return to enjoy the whole year. Your support is greatly appreciated!

Each month of the calendar featurs one of these incredible maps with the author and map's name, and you can order your own copy of the calendar today. Thanks to everyone who voted and a special thanks to the winners -- be sure to take a moment and congratulate each of them.

In no particular order, the winners by majority vote are:
DM-UCMP2-Taron by Michael "BIOS" Schorr & Jos "Sjosz" Hendriks

DM-Redkin by Sjoerd "Hourences" De Jong

CTF-UCMP-Aquatica by Jos "Sjosz" Hendriks

DM-Fractionary-X2 by Philipp "Soma" Urlich

DM-UCMP2-Adamantium by Michael "BIOS" Schorr

DM-Serenissima by David "sHoKaZulu" Avery

DM-UCMP2-Churn by Steve "Luv_Studd" Keene

CTF-Gralada by Rogelio "Desperado#2" Olguin

CTF-UCMP2-Vadamerca by Sander "SaKa" Kamps

CTF-Hydro64 by Cory "SpoonDog" Spooner

DM-UCMP2-Saiko by Ben "Slainchild" Edney & Philipp "Soma" Urlich

DM-Mako by Daniel "KaMi" Diaz

You can see snapshots of the calendar pages or order your own copy, as well as visit each map's detail page or add the author's to your favorites list from the Best Maps of '05 2006 Calendar page.

We've also thrown together a map pack containing each map above for the convenience of downloading them all at once. You'll find download mirrors for the map pack listed on the calendar page as well.

    woot x 10.

Thanks for hosting this event again. :)

Congrats to the final 12 - nice maps there - glad to see Hydro and Redkin in this mix, as well as Fractionary. I'm curious as to what maps were 'close but not quite'; I'm sure there were several that could've been there just as easily.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! The calendar is awesome this year. My favorite design out of the three years we've been doing it.

There were nearly 300 different maps voted for and a few well-deserving maps almost bumped their way into the top 12: DM-Goatswood, ONS-Maelstrom, DM-Coldcity, DM-Sirea, DM-1on1-Painkiller, CTF-CannonFodder2, DM-1on1-Roughinery, DM-Soma, DM-TheOnion and a handful of others.

There were a few disqualifications too. But only because they were last year's winners :)

A handful of clan maps got nearly 300 votes each, which would have put them in the top four wining positions. However, about 290 of the votes for each were by a single person which were counted as one vote each, so it wasn't anywhere near being a top contender ;)

Thanks for the sweet calendar. Congrats to all!

Although it's a bit late... a bit unlucky for the first month map. :P
Maybe next year it'll make it for christmas!?

    Anyway great work!
