Perhaps it's just me, but there have been several times that I wish I could moderate someone else's 'unfair' vote of my rating unfair in return. There is quite simply a lot of grey area in the rating/moderation system. I've rated maps within 0.4 of their standing rating and been moderated 'unfair', and then I've rated maps +/-3.0 of their standing rating and been moderated 'fair'. In any experiment, test, trial, etc. one of the first things a researcher usually does is acclimatize the data collectors to the rating/judging system. Ok.. I'll cut to the point. Why not establish a database of sample maps with 'official' ratings? New raters view these, and compare all new material to them. I admit that, given the three categories maps are rated on (gameplay, construction, and computer AI), coming up with a rating standard would be difficult. Gameplay, in particular, is a very subjective category. Computer AI is probably the easiest of the three. Does the computer AI handle EXACTLY like a human player of comparable skill? Absolutely yes is a 10. Absolutely no, can't shoot it's way out of a paper bag is a zero. Construction is the second easiest.. so far, I've seen very few maps in the system that get rated a 10 construction. I feel like a comparison of what percentage of total features these maps might have compared with what the Engine is truly capable of might work as a comparison. I also feel like architectural/geologic realism should play a factor in the construction rating. On to gameplay.. this one probably causes the most fluctuation in rating from rater to rater. What one person feels makes a great game another person can't stand. Me, for example.. I play on a Mac. Open GL handles a bit different than other renderers.. I may get FPS problems when other players don't.. I'd give the map a low rating, they wouldn't. Also.. I'm one of those rare all-keyboard players. No mouse.. no trackball.. just keys baby ;) I first started playing first-person shooters with Bungie's Marathon.. *bow head in honor* Anyway, enough reminiscing. The point is, I have to track vertical motion with keys, meaning terrain meshes are the bane of my existence. Onslaught maps, in general, make me sad. Basic moral of my story.. the gameplay rating isn't going to be an easy one to standardize. Good luck there :) Ok, I've rambled on long enough. Once again, a wonderful site. Any thought of expanding to other file types? There are a few decent sites out there for UT2004 mods and models, but none with a rating/review system like mapraider!"

wow, you brought up a lot of good points.

about the "official raatings". it could work if on the ratings page, you'd link off to another map to view samples, preferably a full review though, so you could "read" what the reviewer wrote and the newb rater could rate their maps based on that model.

i too believe many players are reluctant to give construction too high a score due to a non-understandment of the unreal engine.

have you ever tried to use a mouse for your field of view? i can't play console games specifically for this reason.

    "non-understandment"

    thats cute
i too am a scientist, and the last thing i want to see happen is for everyone to go to that level of thought into every map reviewed or scored. this IS a game. i love having 3 catagories. as stated in the review guidlines, you should give reasons for your score in each catagory, and people can then disagree with you. i really don't mind, and i even expect people to disagree with me.
anyway, great site. you do a great service to a , what seems to me to be a more and more fractured community (since the advent of ons)

Thanks everyone for the great feedback!

And the unsubscribe links in forum notification emails should now work :)

I think the map rating system works well as is. No matter how varied the ratings for any given map are with outlier values that are hugely over or under inflating a map's worth the moderations always seem to bring the score back to something which is a pretty true and fair representation of what the map's actually worth.

Overcomplicating this system, including remoderating past scores, would ruin it. Also the fact that you get one chance to leave a score may make people think a bit more about how they score the map.

In other words; if it ain't broke, why fix it? :)

Hello. great site. i visit often, to see how my moh maps are performing on the downloads. but recently, i gave up on moh mapping to go to something newer, Call of duty 2. now i dont know if this as been requested yet, but i feel like support for the Call of Duty series (Vcod, CoD: UO and CoD2) would be a great addition to the site.

So, that being said, thanks alot to the admin here for their great job. keep up the good work.

I agree with CypheR...as I had hoped that Medal of Honor would be titled just MOH as there are so many variations now..I.e. spearhead, breakthru....
Now that COD2 is out and the radient has been released, it would be an optimum time to add this COD category to the database.
I see new maps "flying" in for COD2 and COD and you would surely be generating lots of interest here.

I was (still) thinking about the front page. If any modifications were to be made in future to the homepage the user "maps you haven't rated yet" panel could be rebuilt as part of the individual user stats page. It may make for a less cluttered homepage look (and possibly a faster load).

As I've said before if the list could be user edited it would also be good. Some maps just don't get rated because the links to other sites don't work, the maps don't exist there anymore or the maps were faulty and couldn't be played.

*big loopy smiley from here* :)
