Licence information

PeterSilie PeterSilie — December 26, 2011
I am new on this forum, so plz be patient with me, if my question is already answered somewhere else :}
I just miss a point where i can set licence information of the work i made.
would be nice to select maps sorted by licence. is there a chance to include this for submitters?
all recent files could be sorted as "unknown".

thx

Not sure what you mean, Peter.

Are you talking about a place to put information in regards to others using your map or map parts in their own creations, ie. derivative works? If so, then the best place for that information is in a readme file contained in the archive (ZIP, RAR, etc) so that it is always included with the map files themselves.

When you say "sorted as", are you specifically talking about a license that is assigned to the map such as the GPL, Copyright/left, etc? Can you give some examples?

    thx 4 reply! :)

I´ve uploaded several maps and all of them are GPL2 (some of them GPL2 or later).
I would like to see other GPL maps here to search the source for some kind of study or trying to impove this existing maps.
It is hard to download them all just to see, that there is no map file included.

So a little hint from the uploader regarding the license would improve mapraider (projects could see imediately, which maps they could include for their own).
It just needs one more select box for the uploading contributor to fill in and - maybe - a possibility to select a filter.
Default could be "unknown" which wouldn´t break compatibility on already uploaded maps.

It's a very interesting idea and I'd love to see that as well.

But to be honest, I'm not sure how well it work work just yet. In all of the many thousands of maps that I've looked at, the vast majority of authors simply say: "Don't use this without my permission." A very small few say "Feel free to use this" and almost none mention something like the GPL. Yours are some of the only ones I've ever seen :) The other catch to this is that quite often, maps use 3rd-party assets that with a non-transferrable license. So while they may release their map as GPL, some of the included assets aren't and it'd be inaccurate to say that the map is released with a copyleft license.

I'll need to think about this more, but there may be something I can put in to accommodate it on a basic level. I've added your idea to the list of items for consideration in future Mapraider 2 updates though, so thanks!

If anyone else has feedback on this issue, feel free to chime in.
