UT99/GOTY - PlayerStart Error?

Descend5 Descend5 — July 20, 2011
Hi Mapraider! I've been building a map basically for racing warheads through an obstacle course. However after an hour and a half of work, I decided to test the map thus far. But UT crashes and I get the following message in a dialogue box:

=====================================================================

Could not find starting spot (level might need a 'PlayerStart' actor)

History: MatchViewportsToActors <- (DM-Warhead obstacle
course.unr) <- ClientInit <- UGameEngine::LoadMap <- LocalMapURL
<- UGameEngine::Browse <- ClientTravel <- UGameEngine::Tick <-
UpdateWorld <- MainLoop

=====================================================================

Of course like any other newb, I didn't understand anything but the first line.
I had added PlayerStarts to the map before testing as well.

So what can I do to make UT 'find' the starting points?

Thanks in advance ;)

    Did you rebuild your map before trying it? If you're talking about UT'99, also make sure the playerstarts are positioned floating above the ground a bit. There's a bug in UT in that if playerstarts are not high enough for the player to spawn, they won't be found and/or will cause the player to be killed the instant they spawn.

    Yeah I made sure I rebuilt everything first, geometry couldn't have been the problem. But I'll try repositioning the playerstarts a bit higher up, and away from corners.

    Thanks for the quick reply,

    Moving the Playerstarts to a more open location had no effect. I doubted spacing had anything to do with it.

    Are your playerstarts in a water zone? I seem to recall that they won't work there or something....

    None of the playerstarts were placed within a water zone.

    Have you tried removing all the player starts and re-adding them?

    If it were me, I'd make a copy of my map file, and then remove any non-brush item (zones, lights, etc.) and then start re-adding them starting with a single playerstart until I figured out where the issue was.

    Make sure that there is at least 128 units of space all around apart from the floor.
    Also make sure it's not pointing into the ground or it's not too high up.
    Head room is also important.

    Also do a paths build before you save as well.

    Hi again Freakin Meany :D
