:) Thanks for the feedback, bobzilla. And I appreciate the exploration of example ideas.
My primary goal with this new design was to first and foremost make the map screenshots POP from the page and become the focus. I wanted the mapper's work of art to be the center of attention and not the site. I did spend a lot of time (years) exploring colors and patterns for the web site surround, but with such a wide variety of maps and large screenshots on the site now, it was quite challenging to find something that didn't make your eyes go cross-eyed as they fought against which thing to look at.
Granted, perhaps the header text could be a little more exciting ...
I refer to the visual design of M2 as "the headshot design." The inkblots across the top of the page is a representation of a headshot, with the blood dripping down onto the footer. Does that make it less boring? :D
You're probably asking -- "If it's supposed to be blood splatter, why is it gray and not red?" The reason is because the map screenshots all have overall color tones and when you pair many of those color tones with a red background, it can be very ugly (in my opinion anyway).
I'd also like to complain about colors. :) There is not enough contrast between the gray stars and the gray background in the recent comments panel, it's hard to tell full and empty stars apart.
I agree that maps should be the focus and all backgrounds bland and unassuming, don't ever change this. If you need options to make it more interesting, I guess you could try adding a (stylized) texture to the background, then you'd have blood dripping on metal or some kind of stone, maybe several of them rotating randomly. Maybe not just with every reload, but only once a day or something like that
