Convert or re-use CTF maps for DM?

rsgranne rsgranne — April 11, 2005
This may be a bizarre question, but I haven't been able to find the answer anywhere else, though I suspect it's going to be "no".

If I find a great UT 2004 CTF map that I think would also make a great DM map, is there any way to easily convert or re-use it? There are several CTF maps that would make really cool DM maps, but I don't know how to convert them. This is true for any map - Assault, Onslaught, and so on.

Thanks!

    >Before converting and releasing any map make sure you've asked the author for approval.<

    1 delete the flags
2 delete assault paths (if there are any)
    3 rename CTF-xxx to DM-xxx
    This should do it.
You may also want to change DefaultGameype.
4 goto view>Levelproperties>DefaultGameype> change xGame.xCTFGame to XGame.xDeathMatch do the same with PreCacheGame.
    5 weapon/health etc. placement.

Tks, saka. I still have a question: you said to "1 delete the flags 2 delete assault paths ... 4 goto view>Levelproperties>DefaultGameype> change xGame.xCTFGame to XGame.xDeathMatch".

Using what tool? I've never made a map for any game, so I'm wondering if I'm getting in over my head. How hard would it be to delete the flags?

Also, you said "do the same with PreCacheGame". Can you give some more details? Where would I find the PreCacheGame?

    Tks for your help!

UnrealEd - it comes with the PC version of the game. Should be in the system directory as an executable. It's a VERY sophisticated app and if you've never used it before will probably be overwhelming. There are a lot of sites on the net that have tutorials and stuff. Just check Google.com if you get stuck :)

And just to reiterate what Saka said: Before converting and releasing any map make sure you've asked the author for approval.

UnrealEd - that's what I thought. Okey dokey (rolling up sleeves), I'll try it out.

BTW - these maps are for my personal use only. I'm not planning on releasing them at all. I appreciate what you guys are saying, though, about asking first.

    Tks for your help!

to delete the flags just right click and choose delete. i wouldn't worry too much about assault paths i would just change the game type as mentioned by saka. when you open up the editor at the very top you will see: (file edit view brush build tools help) choose view then from the pull down menu choose>Level Properties from that box find where it says LevelInfo and expand that menu. somewhere in the middle of that menu it will say default game type in the box to the right it will say xGame.xCTFGame (because it is a ctf map) if you click that box you will notice you can change the properties of it. change them to XGame.xDeathMatch a little bit farther down the same menu group you will see PreGameCache it will probably say XGame.xDeathMatch or maybe XGame.xLastManStanding if it is the later just change it to XGame.xDeathMatch then save the map. i would rebuild all first but thats another topic for another day. if you would like to learn via video tutorials you can download them from http://www.3dbuzz.com for free and they are very good as a place to start.

I changed an Onslaught map to DM before. My way was decidedly low tech. I saved a copy of Ons. Urban to "My Documents" for example. Once there, I just changed the prefix to DM. I dragged the map with it's new name into the maps folder. It played as DM. Anything related to Onslaught was no longer there. Give it a try. If it doesn't work, delete the new version.
